Cold Brew VS Iced Coffee
The debate is finally over!
Cold Brew vs Iced Coffee
While cold brew has taken the reigns as one of the most popular cold caffeinated drinks, there are still many misconceptions about the difference between cold brew and your run of the mill coffee poured over ice aka iced coffee.
The story of cold brew’s introduction to the world starts with a man name Todd Simspson, who, after taking a trip to Peru in 1960 was introduced to cold brew and developed his own “Toddy brewing system.” This system involves steeping coffee grinds for 12 - 24 hours in cold water In order to extract a rich, smooth, coffee flavor with a higher concentration of caffeine and lower acidity compared to its hot brewed counter part. Although Mr. Simpson brought cold brew to the world and swept the nation in popularity by the 90s, the first evidence of cold brew coffee was found in japans “Kyoto style brew” in the late 1600s.
Needless to say, cold brew is not a new trend but still relatively unknown in its unique brewing method and flavor profile when compared to a hot coffee poured over ice. In short this is the way cold coffee should be enjoyed. Using the cold brew method allows coffee makers to get the most out of their coffee roasts. Specialty coffee is preferred in the cold brewing method as the lack of heat helps to extract an amazing flavor with a low acidic, clean finish.
There are numerous benefits to specialty cold brewed coffee. Perhaps some of the most important being the roasting process. Specialty coffee is hand roasted in small batches to ensure a consistent rich flavor and only high quality coffee on the shelves. Speciality coffee trumps all others seeing that it is an Arabica blend. Arabica blends have a sweeter, smoother taste with hints of fruit or chocolate. Robusta on the other hand has a stronger, harsh, bitter taste easily picking up grainy or rubbery overtones Most commonly found in iced coffee aka hot coffee poured over ice.
